On July 25, 2007, Tunisia celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic. Tunisia gained its independence on March 20, 1956, after a long national struggle launched following the establishment of the French Protectorate in Tunisia on May 12, 1881, date of the signing of the «Bardo Treaty».

In his speech at the closing of the 7th ordinary session of the RCD Central Committee (June 16, 2007), President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali highlighted the importance of the 50th anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic. He said : « We once again reassert the need to make sure the celebration by Tunisian men and women of this glorious event constitutes an opportunity to anchor their sense of patriotism, especially the young generations among them, in such a way as to preserve the national memory and deepen, in each citizen, the sense of pride to belong to Tunisia and its glorious heritage ».

Half a century after the establishment of the republican system in Independent Tunisia, it would be useful to review the process of the evolution of this system in our country, and to highlight its major landmarks throughout Tunisia’s history.
